“A holiday in the old customs house” – that was the clients’ vision. On either side of the green border between Rhineland-Palatinate, Alsace and Lorraine, the Unterpetersbächlerhof was brought back to life: 19 holiday apartments in five buildings on two sites close to each other – 14 apartments in Fischbach bei Dahn and five more in the customs house of the health resort of Ludwigswinkel, around four kilometres away.

Built in the 1930s, the customs houses are classified by the Ministry of Culture as particularly worthy of protection and were renovated in line with heritage-conservation requirements. Restored, they shine in their former glory once more – but with a new use.

The sandstone cliffs, the castles, the forest and the water – the four defining features of the Palatinate Forest/Northern Vosges region – inspired the interior design. The colour concept works with the light and the moods of the surrounding nature: it picks up the cream shade of the facades and the sage tone of the historic railings and shutters, brings in the wood of the exposed beams and oak floorboards, and rests on reddish sandstone, grey and ecru tones – accented by the green of pine needles.

The particular challenge: to furnish each of the 19 apartments individually while still letting an overall concept with a Franco-German flair shine through. Antiques and the clients’ passion for art and beautiful furnishings shape the rooms.

The upmarket holiday apartments are aimed at everyone who loves nature – hikers, mountain bikers and anglers as well as couples and families, with particular attention paid to trail riders and dog owners. The furnishings are allergy-friendly, and two of the largest apartments are designed to be barrier-free. Inside and outside merge, and the picturesque surroundings become part of the rooms.
