An inconspicuous retail unit in Karlsbad-Langensteinbach was to become a flower shop that people remember – not just for what it sells, but for the space itself. Rather than simply putting in shelves, we rethought the floor plan, customer routes and lighting from the ground up.

At its centre is a landscape of shelving and display units that shows off cut flowers, pots and decorations so that customers are guided through the shop without feeling guided. A restrained service counter in dark metal forms a calm counterpoint to the riot of colour from the flowers and gives the space a clear point of contact.

Materials and colours pick up the freshness of the range without competing with the flowers themselves: pale limewashed walls, untreated wood and accent lighting draw the eye to the merchandise rather than the fittings. Green plants and foliage were deliberately built into the shelving architecture, so the transition between sales floor and stock stays fluid.

The result is a shop concept that can change with the seasons – from spring bouquets to Christmas arrangements – without the basic structure having to be rethought every time. That flexibility was part of the planning from the very beginning, not a compromise made after the fact.
