The existing living area in this house in Ettlingen was functional but restless: too many materials, too little continuity. Before a single piece of furniture was chosen, we completely rethought the floor plan and sightlines.

Calm furnishings in a strong dark blue, a pared-back material and colour scheme and a reworked lighting plan make the room feel brighter and larger without adding a single square metre. We deliberately left an open fireplace free as a restful focal point, rather than letting it disappear behind furniture.

Shelving and storage were planned as one continuous built-in element that creates order without cutting up the room – so even with a lot of storage, a generous sense of space remains. Large windows facing the garden were deliberately kept clear to connect inside and outside visually.

The result: a living area where you feel the calm before you can consciously explain it – an effect that comes from the sum of many small decisions, consistently carried through.
